Buccaneers Draft 2008

I think this is going to be the wildest draft in memory. The Buccaneers will be operating under the possibility that none of their draft picks will be a starter. With the free agent acquisitions to add depth to the roster, the Buccaneers will most likely be taking the best player available on their board. It is unlikely they draft a linebacker, safety or tight end this year, but the rest of the field is wide open.

Round 1

Best Bet: Donnie Avery, WR, Houston. PewterReport.com likes Avery because he is a Joey Galloway clone, but there have been reports calling his intelligence into question. Apparently, he scored really low on the Wunderlich Test. I think the Buccaneers will pull the trigger on Avery if 2 or more WR are selected prior to the Buccaneers selection at 20.

I also read that Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida, is not high on the Buccaneers draft board which suprises me. What other cornerback would be worthy of the 20th pick and still a good value. Not sure.

Chris Johnson, RB, East Carolina was the fastest guy at the NFL Combine. He could be a possibility.

If Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville is available will the Buccaneers consider him to be the QB of the future. What does that mean for Luke McCown?

What if a premier defensive end like Philip Merling or a premier offensive tackle like Chris Williams is still on the board?

Round 2

Best Bet: If Chris Johnson is still on the board, he will be snapped up for his versatility and ability to make splash plays.
If Avery is not selected at 20 and is still on the board, he will the pick.

It is entirely possible that the Buccaneers will select a the best available cornerback on their board like Tracy Porter (Indiana) or Brandon Flowers (Virginia Tech).

Rounds 3 – 5

Best Bet: If the Buccaneers have selected two offensive players, Round 3, 4 and 5 will be defensive selections (probably two of the three will be cornerback).
